Associate of Science in Nursing (Registered Nurse)
Program Learning Outcome (PLO)

The competencies measured are based on Foundation skills and Workplace competencies.
  1. Foundation skills are defined in three areas: basic skills, thinking skills, and attributes.
    • a) Basic Skills: A worker must read, write, perform arithmetic and mathematical operations, listen, and speak effectively. These skills include:
    • b) Thinking Skills: A worker must think creatively, make decisions, solve problems, visualize, know how to learn, and reason effectively. These skills include:
    • c) Attributes: A worker must display responsibility, self-esteem, sociability, self-management, integrity, and honesty.
  2. Workplace competencies are defined in five areas: resources, interpersonal skills, information, systems, and technology.
    • a) Resources: A worker must identify, organize, plan, and allocate resources effectively.
    • b) Interpersonal Skills: A worker must work with others effectively.
    • c) Information: A worker must be able to acquire and use information.
    • d) Systems: A worker must understand complex interrelationships.
    • e) Technology: A worker must be able to work with a variety of technologies.
Education Requirements
Registered nursing programs prepare students for the success of the Guyana Nursing Council Exam or the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). The minimum educational requirement for receiving the Board’s authorization to take the exam is an Associate Degree in Nursing. Upon successfully completing the board exams and licensure by the BON, the candidate may be employed as a registered nurse.

Eligibility Requirements
Each school determines its eligibility requirements for enrolling students in the nursing education program. Following are some general criteria:
  • A high school diploma or GED for applicants 17 years or older
  • A completed application to the School of Nursing
  • Police clearance or Minimum level one fingerprint clearance card
  • Drug screen
  • CSEC, GSCE, COMPASS, ASSET, SAT or ACT test scores
  • Prerequisite courses – Biology, mathematics, English, and Health Sciences
  • CPR and health insurance.

  • Didactic sessions online
  • Simulated laboratory sessions
  • Hospital, rehabilitation, clinical, and outpatient practical learning
