Health and Safety

The health and safety of all GAU stakeholders are Important to us. The pandemic has made it even more challenging to secure the health and safety of stakeholders on campus. As such, GAU has mandated that all stakeholders entering the university’s premises must be vaccinated against Covid-19. This mandate is in keeping with the COVID-19 regulations in Guyana and the USA.

Other Immunization requirement

GAU students must present evidence of vaccination against measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, and hepatitis B in order to commence any clinical training at GAU. Clinical training commences during the first term in pre-medical sciences during the Essentials in Health Assessment Course. Thus, all students in the school of nursing and school of medicine must, during the first week of the academic term, present documentation confirming immunization.

Required Health Training

Nursing and Medical Students are also required to take the Infectious Control course and BLS course during their first year at the University. Without these certifications, they will not be allowed to matriculate into the clinical sciences program. PPE training is also mandated for students attending clinical rotations at GAU clinical sites. Kindly contact your clinical coordinator for more information.

Health Insurance

Health Insurance is now a requirement for international students studying in Guyana as of the fall 2020 term. Prior to traveling to Guyana, the Finance Office will provide students with an invoice for annual insurance coverage. Students in need of medical treatment can also receive free healthcare at the Georgetown Public Hospital. Students in the USA are required to have health insurance. Students will provide GAU with proof of private medical insurance. GAU may facilitate medical insurance, and the cost will be added to your annual invoice.

Health Insurance

Liability Insurance is not a requirement for nursing and medical students in Guyana. Students on rotations in the USA and UK must have liability insurance. Billing for insurance will be added to your annual invoice.
